Tips to Help Keep Your Mail Safe from Theft

Mail theft is when someone steals mail or parcels out of your mailbox. While many thieves are just looking for cash and valuables, identity thieves also know your mail contains a lot of valuable personal information—like credit card numbers, investment account information, social security numbers, insurance policy information and more.

Tips From the Postal Inspector’s Office:
  • Pick up your mail promptly after delivery—never leave it in your mail-box overnight.
  • If you change your address, immediately notify your Post Office™.
  • Tell your Post Office™ when you’ll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.
  • Consult with your local Postmaster for the most up- to-date regulations on mailboxes, including the availability of locked centralized or curbside mail boxes.
  • If you see a mail thief at work, or if you believe your mail was stolen, call police immediately, then call your local Post Office™.
